Built between Scenic By-way #177 and the BNSF tracks the Frontier Store House in Matfield Green is as peaceful as can be. It started as a log cabin in 1868. Town “developer” David Mercer, after whom a nearby creek was named, built it and ran a frontier store and post office; a few years later, a stone room was added. Both the log cabin and stone room were preserved when, in the late 1880s, a two-story addition was created.
After having stood empty for more than 40 years, the Frontier Store House was beautifully restored and renewed, and became a comfortable very well insulated family retreat and guest house.
Only steps away from the tallgrass prairie and open range cattle country, this home away from home is perfect for long weekends and vacations.

Matfield Station
Contact: Katherine Hamm
The Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe railroad company built the bunkhouse structure in 1922 to provide shelter for the section hands who maintained the railroad. This is one of several such facilities built for each section ten to thirty miles apart. The bunkhouse, one of the few remaining, included 11 units and an adjacent foreman’s house.
In 2001, Bill McBride, Julia Fabris McBride, and Karl Rohlich purchased Matfield Station. The historic Santa Fe building was “one good rain away” from collapse, and they couldn’t stand to see the bunkhouse disintegrate.
The Bunkhouse now has 2 units available for overnight stays. We love the views, open space and fresh air, horses across the road, Flint Hill sunsets, and wind on the prairie.
